Prostate / PSA Testing

There has been a great deal of media attention again recently regarding prostate cancer and PSA testing.

This understandably has led to men over the age of 50 being encouraged to have a PSA blood test that can be helpful in detecting prostate cancer. However, despite men being urged to have the test it’s not a straightforward screening test.

There are pros and cons to PSA testing and there are conditions that need to be met to optimise the testing. As a result, at Stow Surgery, we discuss these factors with men before they embark on PSA testing.

Further information is available in the attached document which is an excerpt from a talk that Dr Sherringham gave at the FOSS AGM in 2022.

More information is available on the NHS website.

Men with urinary symptoms should contact the surgery for an urgent appointment otherwise a routine appointment to discuss testing can be made either online or by calling the surgery on 01451 830625.
